How Do I Know If I Have A Water Leak?

Some water leaks are pretty obvious. When you see water dripping down from your ceiling, for instance, it's fairly certain that a plumber is needed. Other times, however, you may not be able to see a leak yourself. Many pipes are hidden behind walls or underneath the floors of your home. To check for these hidden leaks, your plumber will likely use specialized tools and techniques such as water meters and infrared cameras to detect any signs of moisture. 

But how will you know to have a plumber look for a hidden leak in the first place? Make sure to watch out for these signs that a leak may be present somewhere in your pipes:

• Abnormally high water bills
• An unexpected decrease in water pressure
• Moisture that appears on walls and ceilings 
• If your toilet takes longer than usual to fill up or makes strange noises

When Should I Repipe My Home?

Repiping your home should usually only be done as a last resort if you have persistent or serious leaks that can't be fixed with regular maintenance and repair. Many homes built in the 1980s and 1990s will go ahead and repipe because their homes were constructed with pipes made with polybutylene, which have been shown to be very prone to leaks. If your pipes are old and corroded, repiping may especially be necessary for safety reasons.

Some signs that you may be ready for a whole house repiping include:

• Low water pressure.
• Your home has pipes made of materials that may be prone to corrosion, like galvanized steel or lead.
• Multiple leaky spots even after repairs.
• The seals of your pipes are starting to wear out.
